Waterloo Square

In a partnership with South Tyneside Borough Council, our client, Henry Boot Developments, wanted to redevelop 9 acres of brownfield site in South Shields into a retail and leisure complex with real presence.

With this in mind we set to work and delved beyond the boundaries of traditional retail unit design and create something with movement and colour – a statement developing announcing the regeneration and extension of the town’s retail heart.

It was important to meet the retailers’ requirements for rectangular shaped units, but to break up the form and mass, we designed colourful exterior features to adorn the building.

A dramatic wave form roof creates interest and a dynamic style which is visible from the nearby elevated Metro Line and together with a mesh of flags and masts ushers visitors in with a colourful, bright reminder of the town's nautical history.

The centre incorporates 4650sq metres of supermarket space, 3720sq metres of non-food retail space and safe guards the potential for a future leisure centre development and a diner / restaurant.
