Hartley Health Centre

Written by

The provision of the Hartley Health Centre presents an opportunity to create an engaging, modern healthcare environment, relocating and combing two existing, aging GP surgeries.

The new health centre is based on the ground and first floor of a development for retired living constructed by Populo Living. The layout of the health centre focuses on patient, visitor and staff movements, being as efficient as possible and keeping wayfinding clear and concise and consistent. The scheme fulfils and exceeds the requirements of the NHS HBN’s and HTM’s, looking into the future and providing flexibility to spaces without significant intervention and utilises technology to allow HCSN to review ‘how’ the building is ‘performing’ from a sustainability, efficiency and optimisation point of view – resulting in the brief for future projects being tweaked and reviewed as required.

We worked closely with our client to develop the design with the aim of the scheme to relocate two existing GP Practices into a new, purpose-built health centre within the wider Hartley Avenue development. The Health Centre enables the practices to provide patient cantered care, in a modern environment, offering a wide range of health services to benefit the local community.

“HCSN is incredibly proud to have delivered this outstanding healthcare facility in partnership with an exceptional design team and a highly conscientious contractor. Their shared dedication, and attention to detail helped create a space that is not only functional and efficient but also welcoming and inclusive. Hartley Health Centre is a unique health centre for East Ham, now stands as a flagship example of what thoughtful collaboration can achieve, and a lasting asset to the community we serve. Hartley Health Centre represents a major step forward in improving health outcomes for the people of East Ham. Designed around the needs of both patients and staff, this modern, purpose-built facility that delivers enhanced access to care, supporting early intervention, and empowering the community to lead healthier, more connected lives.”

The ground floor provides nine consult rooms, nine treatment rooms, two consult training rooms, and generous office accommodation. All accessed from a central modern and inviting reception and waiting area. The first floor provides a further two consult rooms and two treatment rooms in addition to further office space and staff room. Staff only spaces have been treated with the same level of detail as patient facing areas, promoting well-being and a high quality working environment.

The overall aesthetic has been purposefully designed to move away from a ‘traditional’ clinical setting, using a neutral material palette, images of the local area with splashes of complementary colours through soft seating. Furniture has been carefully selected to move away from rows of ‘waiting room’ furniture but to provide furniture suitable for all. The team worked with community groups and staff to develop how they wanted ‘their’ health centre to look and feel.
