UoM Humanities Student Hub refurbishment / fit-out

We were appointed through the University of Manchester (UoM) framework to deliver internal alteration and refurbishment of the Humanities Bridgeford Street (HBS) Kantorowich Library to develop it into a student Hub and study space.

The design process involved stakeholder engagement with the key university and facilities stakeholders including the library department.

The scheme has presented a number of challenges, which often are associated with a refurbishment of a building of this age (1970s). This included the risk of the presence of asbestos. Accessibility concerns also had to be addressed with ramp access replacing stepped changes in level.

Our solution provides a modern, light, accessible, flexible and usable space with the goal to re-energise the building whilst respecting the heritage and character of the Kantorowich building and providing better links to outside space.

We interrogated bespoke furniture to make best use of the space and provide a flexible social area and private and group study spaces. We coordinated the furniture selection and suppliers and interior design to create the desired look and feel.

Our delivery encompassed full architectural services, Principal Designer and Contract Administrator duties.
