Hartlepool Sixth Form College

This award-winning scheme was the culmination of a brief to expand and develop the existing Hartlepool Sixth Form College to create a modern and flexible learning environment.

The existing Grade II Listed Merchant House played a key role in the identity and marketing of the college. A design was needed which would overcome the circulation and security shortcomings of the old College and consequently to create a secure learning environment with ease of circulation between all facilities.

We incorporated an ETFE roofed circulation space to Merchant House, creating a light, open and flexible circulation space for staff and students. New build accommodation to the front and rear of the existing building provides modern and flexible teaching and learning space which has been designed to maximise opportunities for natural light and ventilation. At the heart of the new college is a high quality theatre and auditorium with IT links to the performing arts studios. A new sports hall is located for ease of access to the adjoining playing fields. The BREEAM excellent building includes sustainability measures such as advanced Building Management Systems, rainwater harvesting, solar water heating and passive ventilation.

We were thrilled when the project won the SCALA Civic Building Award in 2011 and the Civic Society Award in 2010.

“Jefferson Sheard were the obvious choice as architects on the project. The project team that has worked with us from the first moment have proven themselves sympathetic to our objectives, creative in their design and meticulous in their attention to detail. The design has exceeded our expectations and reflects the essence of value for money. I would recommend unreservedly them to anyone seeking a friendly, professional and efficient team of architects.”
