Net-Zero Housing, Iverhurst Close

Written by Charles Smith Architect

In collaboration with Bonds Builders and Hexagon Housing Association, Jefferson Sheard Architects have transformed a small brownfield site into a Net-Zero, high-quality, family-focused housing development that prioritises affordability, community, and sustainability.

The scheme delivers 11 new homes, a mix of three and four bedroom townhouses arranged around a shared central courtyard designed to encourage social interaction and community engagement.

Embracing a fabric-first approach and incorporating a suite of sustainable technologies, including photovoltaic panels, air source heat pumps, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), and electric vehicle charging points, the project has achieved Net-Zero carbon emissions. All homes have also been awarded A-rated Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), reflecting their exceptional energy efficiency.

“Jefferson Sheard Architects were great to work with—responsive, solutions-focused, and collaborative. They balanced sustainability with cost, supported value engineering decisions, and helped resolve issues quickly to keep the project moving smoothly.”

Architecturally, the development draws inspiration from the nearby William Morris Red House, featuring distinctive brickwork, tall chimneys, and steeply pitched roofs. The external environment is further enhanced by a considered landscape design, incorporating native trees and shrubs, wildflower planting, and dedicated habitats to support local biodiversity.

“Jefferson Sheard Architects shared our vision to build a sustainable, affordable housing development of the highest standard. Their collaborative approach, skilled design and guidance proved invaluable in the success of the project.”
