Skegness TEC College

Written by Sarah Harrison Architect

The new college building provides high-quality practical teaching and learning facilities for a wide range of Further Education courses. Specialist accommodation includes multi-skills construction workshops, electrical and plumbing training areas, motor vehicle workshops, hair and beauty salons, and a ward simulation suite with a care flat supporting health, social care and childcare programmes. Hospitality training is supported by a café and professional-standard training kitchen, providing students with valuable real-world learning experiences.

Jefferson Sheard Architects designed and delivered the project through all RIBA stages, translating the college's aspirations into a contemporary and highly functional learning environment through extensive stakeholder engagement. Alongside meeting the practical requirements of vocational education, the design sought to create a light-filled, modern and welcoming campus that enhances the student experience.

Natural daylight was maximised throughout the building by incorporating strategically positioned lightwells, allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the floorplan. This approach reduces reliance on artificial lighting, improves wayfinding and circulation, and creates a calmer, more attractive environment for learning.

Future adaptability was a key design consideration. The building has been designed to accommodate a potential extension wing, enabling the college to respond to future growth in student numbers without compromising the integrity of the original design.

Since opening, the new campus has contributed to record enrolment levels, including a 50% increase in Further Education students and a projected 125% increase in adult learner numbers, demonstrating the transformative impact of the investment on the college and its wider community.
